What documents are needed to sell a junk car in Illinois?

Selling a junk car in Illinois is a lot less paperwork-heavy than most people expect. Here is what you will typically need to have ready when EZ Cash Cars comes to pick up your vehicle:

  • Vehicle title. This is the most important document. It legally transfers ownership from you to the buyer. If you have the title, the process is straightforward. If you have lost it, see the question about selling without a title below.
  • Valid government-issued ID. A driver’s license or state ID is required to verify that you are the registered owner of the vehicle.
  • Vehicle registration (helpful but not always required). If you have current registration, bring it. It supports proof of ownership and can smooth out the process, though it is not always mandatory.
  • Lien release (if applicable). If you financed the vehicle and there is still a lien recorded against it, you will need documentation proving the loan has been paid off. Without this, the title cannot be cleanly transferred.
  • Bill of sale (sometimes required). Illinois offers a specific Junk Vehicle Bill of Sale form. Some buyers require this; EZ Cash Cars can walk you through it if needed.

Before the vehicle is picked up, remove your license plates. In Illinois, plates stay with the owner, not the car. You can return them to the Illinois Secretary of State’s office or surrender them to avoid future liability.

Also, do not forget to cancel your auto insurance policy once the sale is complete. Keeping insurance on a vehicle you no longer own is a waste of money, and notifying your insurer protects you from liability after the transfer.
